What is Functional Magnetic Stimulation (FMS)?

Functional magnetic stimulation (FMS) of peripheral nerves and muscles is based on the principle of electro-magnetic induction. Functional magnetic stimulation directly activates motor neurons which results in contraction of the muscle or a group of muscles. Besides its muscular effects, other key advantages of direct nerve stimulation by FMS is increase in cell metabolism, improvement in perineural circulation and nutrition.

How does a magnetic field activate a muscle?

Rapid changes of magnetic field intensity induce an electrical current in the neuron. This phenomenon is called electromagnetic induction. Once the current reaches a certain value, a so-called neuron action potential is achieved. This causes the neuron cell to depolarize, which eventually leads to a complete muscle contraction.

What is the difference between magnetic and electrical stimulation of muscles?

Magnetic Stimulation (FMS) is more comfortable than the traditionally employed electrical muscle stimulation (EMS). Unlike EMS which requires direct skin contact, FMS using magnetic fields do not require skin contact and can be used over clothes. As a result of their greater comfort and ease of application, compliance and consequently outcomes are improved with magnetic muscular stimulation.

Furthermore, as FMS uses magnetic waves, it is able to reach deep muscle groups that are not accessible by electrical muscle stimulation which predominantly work only on the surface. This allows for enhanced treatment areas for improved results.

Does this mean I do not have to exercise?

Magnetic Muscle Sculpting (using FMS) works best for people who are engaged in an active lifestyle with a well-balanced diet. If you have a sports injury, you may use this therapy as a rehabilitation for affected muscles. In this case, this therapy should be combined with physiotherapy of your affected areas. Speak to your physiotherapist before treatment.

If you are using this to aesthetically enhance muscle tone, having an active exercise regime is key to attaining your final results in the shortest time. As this treatment works on muscle and not fat, it is also important that you keep your body weight in an ideal range and your fat percentage low so that you are able to see the results of your muscle sculpting therapies.
